Cryonics (Greek for \"icy cold\") refers to the preservation of humans and other animals through the process of cooling to sub-zero temperatures of approximately 77 (-196 C). The premise of cryonics is that such low temperatures effectively halt all biological activity, including the biochemical reactions that cause cells to die, thereby allowing for the indefinite preservation of tissues.
Identity, personality, and memory are thought to reside within the chemical and physical structure of the brain. Thus, as long as the brain can be preserved, so can the person. Although it is not yet possible to reverse this process of total-body cryopreservation, its
proponents argue that it may be possible in the future. Therefore, people and animals who can no longer be kept alive by contemporary medical technology may be frozen until adequate medical methods of treatment and
resuscitation are discovered in the future. In the United States, however, cryonics cannot be legally performed on humans until they have died.
